Transitional turns Modern in Charlotte NC's Cloisters

2515 Cloister Drive may be slightly traditional on the outside but a total WOW on the inside.  This unique modern ranch home on the pond in The Cloisters in Charlotte, NC has  loads of style and a super location.

Once you step inside the doors you find custom modern details at every turn.  The open floor plan leads you thru the formal living room with it's two sided fireplace to the family room.  The ceiling soars above the stacked stone fireplace in the comfortable family room with a wall of windows looking out to the pond.
The kitchen is a knock out with it's stainless wrapped island, zebrawood custom cabinetry and five burner LaCornue stove.  There is also a prep pantry with a custom concrete sink, wine cooler and loads of storage with modern style.

One of my favorite rooms is the curved sun room that with views of the pond.  You won't find a room like this on many other houses.  Also curving is the outside stair case that circles down to the slate patio.
The stairs are so 60's Mod -
I love them.

There are walls of glass everywhere including the basement.  Here you have a cozy playroom and a vintage  kitchen with original gas stove - so cute.

MCM MAD DEALS in Myers Park, Charlotte NC

Each week we bring you our MAD FOR MODERN DEAL!

This week our MCM Mad Deal is in Charlotte NC's posh Myers Park.  Don't believe you can get a modern deal in this upscale hood?  Check out 1300 Queens Road at Queens Towers.  Unit 418 is for sale for only $246,500 and it is 2600 square feet of totally original MCM waiting for you to put your stamp on it.  At less than $96 a square foot, Myers Park hasn't seen these prices in 10 years!  Especially at such a prestigious address where you can walk to restaurants, the grocery store and
library. This address has a stellar Walkscore of 89!

This "modern" unit is on the top floor and some people would call this "Penthouse" location the bomb.  At the end of the buildings North West Corner this unit has windows on three sides.  The living room faces NW to stately Queens Road and the bedrooms look out over the mansions on Granville Road.  The kitchen and dining room side look out to the pool.  With 4 bedrooms and three baths, plus a "manly man" room you can get lost in this unit and not see your significant other for days.
It's unique horse shoe floor plan has lots of opportunities for remodeling.  It's solid concrete construction allow the non-supporting walls to be removed with ease.  There isn't a large master so you probably would want to combine two of the bedrooms to make a spacious light filled master facing Queens Road.  The center core of the unit has 3 full baths, a couple huge closets and lots of other closets.

The "Manly Man" room features a wall of hidden closets, along with a built in "wet bar" with original mini fridge.  It also has a bank of built in bookshelves as does the living room and the office.  The entry has a cute little closet that I
guess was originally a telephone booth... for private conversations, or it could have been the last spot to touch up your lipstick.  See a VIDEO TOUR here.

In addition to this low price, the bank was offering 3.5% toward closing cost but has just switched agents ...but they probably would still do this.  The home also comes with a 2 year warranty.

Charlotte NC Most Modern Neighborhoods: The Cloisters

Although Charlotte, NC doesn't have any neighborhoods that are exclusively modern it does have few neighborhoods that have an above average concentration of mid-century modern homes and what is usually dubbed the atomic ranch.

The first in this neighborhood series:

The Cloisters - This enclave of homes off Providence Road about half way between  Sharon Road and Fairview.  The Cloisters consist of only three roads, a large loop around a pond called Cloister Drive, and two other roads, coming in to it, Pickwick, and Warrington.   A few of my favorite modern homes are in this neighborhood.  When you enter the neighborhood at the corner of Warrington and The Cloisters, 1818 Cloister Drive captures the fun of Modern with it's custom mod metal column to greet you.   Further down Cloister Drive other great homes are 2535 Cloister Drive  currently being restored by Bill and Sue Davis, and  The Solomon and Shirley Levine house at 2300 Clositer Dr. According to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Landmarks Commission, "The Cloisters is one of Charlotte's best preserved examples of upscale suburban landscape planning".
If you are looking for a Charlotte NC, MCM home located with other architecture lovers eheck out all the homes for sale in The Cloisters.

    Hey! Where's the Modern?

Where are the Modern houses in Charlotte?
That is what a lot of people moving to Charlotte ask.  Some cities, like Seattle and Denver, have entire neighborhoods of mid-century modern homes.  But Charlotte's modern homes were built with a more scatter-shot approach.  Most of the mid-century modern homes were built by individuals who purchased a lot in a popular neighborhood, hired an architect and then built the home of their dreams.   So, they are scattered all over the Queen City.  There are some neighborhoods that have more than others.  And there are some floor plans that you can find in a few neighborhoods, but for the most part search for a modern home is more like an Easter Egg Hunt than a normal home search.  (See some of our Favorite Modern Hoods.)

Searching for a modern home for sale in Charlotte,on the internet,  can be difficult at best.  Some real estate agents don't know if a home is modern or "Transitional", and many times they just leave that category blank.  Other agents just hit "Contemporary" for any home that has a vaulted ceiling.   So Savvy + Co. has a solution!   A modern home search.   Not all these homes are the slickest modern or the best examples of California Contemporary  but they all have some modern or contemporary aspects.  And it's fun to see what is out there for sale ... and how much the they cost.  The mapping feature also lets you easily see where homes for sale are located.

Here are links to some of the neighborhoods with the most Mid-Century or Contemporary homes:

Lansdowne:  A 60's brick ranch and split-level hood about 20 minutes from Center City Charlotte.
Features great Atomic Ranches and some custom MCM's.

The Cloisters:  This is one of Charlotte's best examples of upscale suburban development and has the
the largest concentration of mid-century modern homes.

If you are looking for a modern home - new or vintage,  Savvy + Co. has several agents that specialize in modern and we are here to help you.  As a group we have sold more modern homes than any agency in town!  Best of all we are only a click away.

Walls of Glass - The section on the right was actually an addition done about 15 years ago designed to fit seamlessly with the original.

    Riviera in Sherwood Forest

This low slung home with it's wide overhangs is an Eames Era Classic.

    Mid-Century Modern in Charlotte NC

little bit of Palm Springs in Charlotte, NC.  Great Mid-Century modern homes are rare in Charlotte, and this is one of them!  This L-shaped ranch wraps the in ground pool off the patio, and screams... "Martini Time".

Located in The Cloisters this neighborhood is one of Charlotte's premier Mid-Century Modern neighborhoods with a nice concentration of modern
    architecture.

2101 Clositer Drive is on the market!  This home is in basic original condition.  It does need some cosmetic updating but it is perfect for someone who wants to put their own decorating stamp on a modern home.  Loads of potential with great bones: Vaulted ceilings, slate entry, great fireplace, and a terrific pool!

    Charlotte Goes Mod

Modern art enthusiast had a big day today as the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC had it’s grand opening. The only museum in the Southeast dedicated to 20th-Century modern art, the Bechtler Museum’s building is also a work of art in itself.  Designed by renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta, in my opinion this is the crown jewel in the Charlotte street scape.

The collection is extensive and includes Calders, Miro, Giacometti and Picasso to name just a few.   It is the personal collection of Hans and Bessie Bechtler and their son Andreas who inherited the collection and wanted to share it with the public.

Check out the Bechtler Museum website and see all that it has to offer!  You will be in for a great experience.
